But it takes more space... probably because the DTS compression is expanded to 6ch WAVs.

James Horner – Titanic (5.1 20-bit but sound mostly from L/C/R)

Got Sting - Brand New Day recently. Wanted to see how much different, if at all, the DTS surround is from the surround track on the DVD-Audio release.

This was a limitation of the OPPO.
Couldn't play a DTS stream from a 44.1/16 file, only multi-channel WAV/FLAC.

However, if you feed the OPPO with the same file over HDMI in, it will gladly decode the DTS in 5.1ch.

Nope. I just picked up that Hell Freezes Over DTS CD . Sounds great overall considering it’s a concert mix.

I guess I’ll keep looking for the DTS LD of it if the mix is indeed different.

The LD dts and DVD dts share the same mix which is much heavier on bass, to the point of sounding a little unnatural.

I think DTS Inc. wanted to show off their technology with these releases.

I own a few of these DTS CDs as well: Steely Dan's Gaucho, Wings's Venus & Mars, Clapton's 461 Ocean Blvd, but the best one that I have, that's truly one of my favorite 5.1 music presentations of all time...

Lyle Lovett -- Joshua Judges Ruth.

It's an absolutely perfect 5.1 presentation of a wonderful undersung album. I highly recommend this album in any form to everyone. But if you're lucky enough to hear this DTS CD, you'll know why I'm so over-the-moon about it.

I have several dozens of DTS-CDs released by the French labels BNL, Syrius and Passavant.

The purpose of this CDs was to released multichannel albums of classical or jazz/blues music recorded naturally with minimal mic techniques (1 mic = 1 channel of audio) to be reproduce with front-end multichannel speaker layout.

The advantage of this technique is that it is possible to enjoy multichannel sound with only 3 or 4 of the 5 channels if, for whatever reasons, it is not possible to have 5 front-end identical speakers.

This recording are generally excellent. Some are still in stock nowadays.

I have been collecting dts CDs for decades now ... and I never heard of them!
Did they start released double CDs 2ch/5ch recently?









No mention of DTS releases on Discogs either.

Hi !

Thank you for your interest.

I think the older DTS CD from one of this label is this one :

It is special because it contains the same program material on the same disc in ordinary CD Audio format and DTS, separated by some 20 mn of silence for security reason. That way, direct comparison with the same disc player between the 2 channels version (only L/R microphones used) and the multichannel version is possible. It is dated 2003.

Discogs lists some DTS CDs from these labels, but they are hard to find with the search engine. For instance :

To listen to this kind of recordings, this loudspeaker lay-out is mandatory :

But it is possible to use only the left, front and center channels and enjoy a better stereophonic effect than in 2 channels nevertheless. I currently listen to this disc that way, because to this day I have only a three channels Hi-fi system (more channels awaiting...).

It's worth noting that both the DTS CD and the DTS LD were issued twice. Apparently Don Henley was unhappy with the mixes used for the original editions for both and had them recalled/reissued.
